American artist P. Moss (Born 1933) was brought up in Staten Island, New York and is known for her portrayals of life in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and of rural landscapes. She attended Washington Irving High School for the Fine Arts. P. Moss received a scholarship to study art at Cooper Union College. She had dyslexia but was good at art though she struggled with some of her classes in high school. In 1955 she graduated and soon after that she married Jack Moss. His husband was a chemical engineer. In 1964, the family relocated to Waynesboro, Virginia. This movement became the crucial in P. Moss' subject matter and art. In 1979, she divorced her husband and re-married in 1982 to Malcolm Henderson, a business manager whom she later divorced again. The creation of her company called Moss Galleries, Ltd. was as a result the influence of her marriage to Malcolm. P. Moss was on the whole drawn to the Mennonite and Amish people. She had a one-person museum exhibition in 1967, after which she started to market her work more seriously. The demand for framed P. Moss art grew very fast because they come ready to hang with all the required accessories. Her delicate style, marked by her unique technique and the careful choice of her subject matter alongside the calm nature of her work, won her widespread acclaim very quickly. Today, her art is collected throughout Japan and Europe, as well as the U.S. and is represented in more than 200 galleries worldwide.
