Gerardus Mercator (Born 1512) was born in Rupelmonde, Belgium. He was a cartographer who’s remembered for the world map he created a based on a new projection which representing sailing courses of constant bearing as straight lines. This innovation is still employed in nautical charts that are used for navigation. During his time, he was the most famous geographer in the world but, in addition, he had interests in magnetism, philosophy, theology, mathematics and history, as well as being an accomplished calligrapher, engraver and maker of scientific instruments and globes. He did not travel much, not like the other great scholars of his time. His knowledge of geography actually came from his library of more than 1000 maps and books, and also from his visitors and from his correspondence with seamen, statesmen, other scholars, merchants and travelers. His early maps were suitable for wall mounting because they were in large formats; but in the second half of his life Mercator more than a hundred new regional maps in a smaller format. These were therefore suitable for binding and he bound them into his Atlas of 1595. Mercator is actually the one who introduced the term atlas for a collection of maps. He chose the word to commemorate the King of Mauretania called Atlas, whom he considered to be the first great geographer. A large part of his income came from the sales of his celestial and terrestrial globes. Today, his works are availed in a variety of formats including framed Gerardus Mercator art which have become very popular with many geographers and institutions.
