American artist Julius Melchers (Born 1860) was among the first American painters to win a Grand Prize at the Paris Universal Exposition. He won a Gold medal from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1932, and was one of the leading American proponents of naturalism. While still a student, he fell under the spell of Jules Bastien-Lepage and other French Naturalist painters. Jules painted unidealized views of present-day country life. The paintings were done using brilliant color and vigorous brushwork combined with an exacting eye for personality and place. They were done in open-air light. Outdoors, the artist concentrated on recording the poetic effects of atmosphere and light in landscapes that were Impressionist-inspired like Hudson River, Bryant Park, and The Wartburg. Melchers was building on what would become his favorite topic in his later years. Melchers became very popular in Germany as an expatriate. In 1909 he was appointed by the Grand Ducal Saxony School of Art in Weimar as Professor of Art. That’s where he remained until the WWI had all but shut down the school. He married Corinne Mackall, a painter, in 1903. Corinne was 20 years younger than Melchers. She studied at the Academy Colarossi and at the Maryland Institute Practical School for the Mechanic Arts. Melchers’ first notable Dutch picture titled “The Sermon” brought him favorable awareness at the Paris Salon and acted as the spring-board for more works and presentations. Framed Julius Melchers art have found their way into many buildings around the world. They are used for decorative as well as academic purposes. Melchers died in 1932.
