Maureen McCarthy is a well known local watercolorist who has exhibited her work at various galleries including the Gafney Library in Sanbornville. Some pieces in her exhibits are for sale. Also on sale are sampling of her work in the form of note cards; while some have been borrowed from private collections. The artist has been making home-made cards, painting and drawing since childhood and she says that she spent countless hours observing the natural world that fascinated her, and she pondered how to portray it in watercolors — deciding how to paint the sparkling water, or which pine tree across the cove had the best crown, or how to draw the curving lines of a loon’s head — all thrilled her as they required much contemplation. She studied art at Northeastern University, attended watercolor workshops and took private lessons. She supplemented that formal education with much self-taught learning, and she feels grateful to live in such a beautiful area that’s so rich in subject matter for her artwork, and with such a wonderful and special community of great people. She’s represented by President of Porterfield's Fine Art, Lance J. Klass. When it comes to the satisfaction of clients, Maureen does not disappoint. She has produced several pieces of art all of which are attractive. Some of her notable works include Balloon Flower”, “Sailboat at Rest,” “Sunrise from Guyot Shelter,” “Great Stone Face,” “Grenier Road Signs,” “PRP Dam in Winter,” “Bob’s Dock,” “Concord Lane,” and “How you get a watercolor,” which many people have said is a constructive and an unusual framed Maureen McCarthy art that fits that title.
