Hulis Mavruk was born in Southern Turkey in 1952. He loved art and everyone around him, including himself, knew that he would become an artist. Mavruk could spend most of his free time sketching and drawing. He is a self-taught artist who has been painting professionally since the age of 6. Starting artwork at such a young age provided him with the means to continually refine his technique. It has also provided him with the opportunity to learn a lot from other renowned artists. Mavruk was hard working and as years went by, he became a professional artist. He had a gallery in Turkey and a portrait studio on Incirlik Air Force Base where the United States Air Force officer paid him to do their portraits. He could also paint some officers that he knew without waiting for their orders. Mavruk’s respect for the African American community dates back from this period. This is because many of his customers were African American Air Force officers. Since 1972 when he moved to America, he has embraced the African American community by painting images portraying African American religious ideals, leaders, and family life. He believed that his work could inspire young African Americans to try to emulate their leaders and to take pride in their heritage. His African American works included families, Buffalo Soldiers, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and African American women. They also included cotton picking, faith and religion and a mother nursing her baby. Mavruk’s works have become famous over the years, a development that has seen many art galleries and dealerships stock ready to mount laminated, canvas, and framed Hulis Mavruk art.
