Framed Macmonnies low Prints

Mary Fairchild MacMonnies Low (1858 - 1946) began her training at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts after she migrated from New Haven, Connecticut to Missouri. After that, she continued with her studies in painting at the Academie Julien in Paris with Robert-Fleury, Lefebvre, and Bouguereau and worked independently with Carolus Duran. Mary loved art so much and these professors and esteemed painters helped mold her early Impressionist style. Her style is noted for its sunny palette and for the brightness. Mary exhibited regularly at the Paris Salons from 1886 to 1907. Her later style was more tonalist and somber. Apart from her diverse canvases, she also worked in numerous genres, including floral still-lives, urban scenes, figurative, and land and seascapes. She also painted murals. Mary’s most famous art was the 1893 mural she made for the Chicago World’s Fair and was exhibited across by Mary Cassatt. In 1888, Mary married Frederick MacMonnies, a sculptor, and together they led a stylish life in Giverny and Paris where they entertained friends like Claude Monet and James McNeil Whistler. After her husband deserted her, Mary remarried Will Hickok Low, the muralist, with whom she lived in Bronxville, New York from 1909 to 1932. Mary won a number of awards and exhibited widely throughout her career. She won gold medals at the Normandy Exposition in Rouen, Dresden International, St. Brieux, and Marseille. In 1906, she became an Associate at the National Academy of Design in New York. Framed Mary Fairchild MacMonnies Low art are housed in many private collections. They can also be seen publicly at the Union League Club of Chicago, IL, the Sheldon Swope Art Museum, and Terra Haute, IN.
