Born in Manhattan, Kansas, Jodi Maas loved art from childhood. Having lived in Hong Kong for 5 years, she experienced the fascinating beauty and diverse cultures of many exotic countries including the Philippines, Japan, Thailand, India, and Nepal. Her mother involver her in craft projects, which provided her early creative influence. They would make elaborate holiday decorations and cakes. Her mother enrolled her in art classes at the local community center. She was also inspired by her father when he drew a huge mural outline from "South Pacific", the record album cover of the movie and his father allowed her and her sister to color it in. Her love for art led her to pursue an education in the field. She joined Kendall College of Art & Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan and obtained a B.F.A. in Illustration. After graduation, she worked as a therapeutic horseback riding instructor, paste-up artist, art director, a fine art painter and a photo retoucher. Since then, Jodi has been creating art professionally for more than two decades. Jodi’s diverse careers have lent influence, color and inspiration to her calling as an artist. She finds creative inspiration all around her: in art museums and books, magazines, the color palettes of nature, and art galleries. Her art takes the viewer on a journey of pure inspiration, infused with a dramatic yet tranquil essence that guides the spirit into realms of new expansion. She prefers to work with acrylic paints, because they dry quickly and because of their transparent layering qualities and depth. She describes her work as a spontaneous blend of harsh and soft applications of paint coupled with slow and deliberate layers to create a contemporary urban feel.
