Danny Lyon (Born 1942) was born in Brooklyn, New York and was raised in Kew Gardens, Queens. He’s the son of Dr. Ernst Fredrick Lyon and Rebecca Henkin. Lyon went on to study philosophy and history at the University of Chicago, where he graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In that same year, he published his first photographs while he was working for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. The pictures appeared in a documentary book about the Southern Civil Rights Movement - “The Movement.” Later, he began creating his own books. The first was a study of outlaw motorcyclists in The Bikeriders collection of 1968. Lyon photographed the cyclists and also joined the Chicago Outlaws motorcycle club as a member. He traveled with them a lot. According to Lyon, the photographs were an attempt to glorify and record the life of the American bikerider. The series became so popular and influential from 1960s to 1970s. During that same period, he also contributed to DOCUMERICA project by the Environmental Protection Agency. By 1967 Lyon was invited to join Magnum Photos but he never became a full member. Lyon has had one man exhibitions in the University of Arizona at the Center for Creative Photography. He’s also exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Lyon’s work can be found in the collections of George Eastman House, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Art and Smithsonian Institute. Lyon’s art continues to elicit a lot of excitements, especially the framed Danny Lyon art.
