Tang Ling (Born in 1971) is an artist based in Singapore. She’s concerned with the urban environment of Singapore, particularly its magnificent architecture, and its effects of violation of the figure and melancholy. Through his charcoal drawings of dark architectural spaces, he seeks to question the over-tidiness of the modern city and the scarcity of warm interpersonal relationships in it. She creates book art, charcoal drawings, performances, installations and videos to explore architectural spaces, places and buildings as communicators of stories about life. Ling graduated from LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts in 2000 with a Diploma in Fine Art. She then proceeded to the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University from where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) degree with Distinction in 2001. Although she also holds a Bachelor of Science degree (Pharmacy) from the National University of Singapore, Tang’s passion has always been painting and drawing. During her days in secondary school and junior college, she was an active participant of arts and cultural events. And as an undergraduate, Tang was appointed the art director for Pharmaceutica, the NUS Pharmaceutical Society’s journal that’s produced annually. She’s one of the artists who have chosen charcoal as their primary medium in Singapore. Thought-provoking and meditative, her works are usually drawings that are done on large scale and they explore urban space and the conditions of the modern city. Framed Tang Ling art are a clear testimony to the effort she puts in her work. She held her first solo exhibition in 2002, where she presented drawings of local architectural spaces done in charcoal.
