Lewis Coleman is an abstract artist whose work focuses on developing text as a visual design element. She creates steel sculpture and mixed media pieces which incorporate her own abstract, automatic writing. She is affiliated to the Silvermine Guild of Artists, Women's Caucus for Art, and the National Association of Women Artists. While as a means for making social and political commentary or of analyzing popular culture most conceptual artists incorporate text into their work, Lewis is more intrigued with developing text as a visual design element. Her work reflects an ongoing exploration into the aesthetics of using language in art. She’s particularly inspired by Asian art and has studied the intricate calligraphy used to decorate ancient screens and scrolls. The columns of elegant, yet simple characters may express specific meanings, but whoever views the art is not required to understand that meaning in order to appreciate the integrity and grace of the artwork. Lewis has won many awards including The Loft Artist's Award, The Elements, Third Place Award, Reflections 2013, Best in Show. Spectrum 2012, Second Place Award, Abstractions, Mayor’s Award, Stamford’s Art Treasures, Best in Show - Faces and Figures, Award of Excellence - Manhattan Arts International Magazine, Second Place Award, Mixed Media, and Honorable Mention for Works on Paper, Reflections. Originally, her invented languages were painted on paper. But as her work progressed, she’s continued to develop new characters by deconstructing and reconstructing her original text to create languages which are visually more complex and richer. Today, framed Lewis Coleman art are highly priced by many collectors.
