John Leone (1929 – 2011) was an artist whose fine art historical and American paintings are collected throughout Europe and the United States. He had many private exhibitions including a show at L. Rockefeller’s Beaverkill Inn and a sold out show in Tokyo. Leone studied at the Cooper Union Art Institute in New York City and at the School of Art and Design. His love of the outdoors and horses influenced his work which appeared on the covers of many adventure and Western novels. Leone’s art has been exhibited nationally and internationally, most recently at the prestigious Wally Findlay Galleries. He became a freelance illustrator after his graduation. His interest in horses began in 1940s when he made a trip to visit his sister and brother-in-law on their ranch in Texas. Since then, he was captivated with horses. He also honed his riding and driving skills, which allowed him to enter horse shows and hunter-paced events. He lived in Catskill Mountains of upstate New York where he was raising and training Quarter Horses together with his wife. When beginning a painting, he would draw a very extensive actual size pencil rendering on parchment, and then, he would transfer the drawing onto a toned canvas or panel using a carbon paper. He would then paint shadows of the composition in burnt umber. He then painted in the background, and whatever fell behind the subject leaving the foreground until last. The horses and hounds in his paintings were often his own. To further his quest for authenticity in his work, he joined a local haunt. Leone died in 2011, but his art is still in great demand, especially the ready to hang framed John Leone art.
