Edmund Blair Leighton (born on September 21st, 1852) was born in London. He was educated at University College School, before he took a position in an office in the city. Although his name is not commonly known, his most famous works are among the most widely recognized paintings of his time. Leighton’s works of Godspeed and the Accolade are used as the epitome of medieval iconography and are found in almost every poster shop around the world. Though Leighton is best known for his medieval compositions, he also painted a large number of nineteenth century costume pieces with similar subject of romantic gesture and male-female interaction. Despite differences in time, the subject of love and romance are the same and universal. His work seems to hold a special place in many people's hearts. Even those who are unfamiliar with him are drawn to his depictions of bygone eras which draw them into another place and time. It is clear from his body of work that he captures a certain quality that reaches the core of human emotion. Leighton became a member of the Langham Sketch Club in 1878 and in 1880 he was given the honor of serving as its president. In 1887 he was elected to the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, but was never voted in as an associate of the Royal Academy. Leighton’s career hit its peak around 1900 with his most famous works of Godspeed, The Accolade, The End of the Song, Alian Chartier, and Vox Populi which he did in 1904. Leighton continued to paint other great masterpieces for many years, and today framed Edmund Blair Leighton art are selling in large numbers.
