Richard Lane is a painter, illustrator and a decorative artist. He studied illustration and fine art at the School of Visual Arts in New York City where he received a Fine Arts degree. Lane paints mainly in acrylics but once in awhile he also paints in oil. After college, he worked for 10 years at a decorative design studio in New York City where he specialized in decorative oil paintings, wall paper design, and murals. Lane also teaches adult and children’s acrylic painting classes in New Jersey at “The Center for Contemporary Art.” He says that when he is excited about what he paints, he wants instant results. For this reason, he prefers acrylics over oil paint because acrylics dry faster. Lane does extensive research for his paintings, using old photographs from museum archives, museum ship models and actual blue prints of the boats themselves. 16 years ago, Lane started building wooden ship models from scratch to help him understand the mechanics of the rigging and construction of the boats. His keen interest in American nautical history has been his main source of inspiration to continue working as a fine artist. It is the graceful fishing schooners of Boston and Gloucester as well as the powerful yet romantic yachts of past America’s Cup races that he captures affectionately on canvas. Today, framed Richard Lane art are much sought after by many collectors. His art can be found in many galleries and museums both in the US and in other countries.
