Born in Cairo, Bassmi Ibrahim’s (Born in 1941) artistic education began at home with his father, who was a devoted photographer. He begins each work in a contemplative state; when he gets a vision, he immediately recreates it on canvas, and then returns to it later to improve the vibrancy and depth of color. The artist admits to paint his spirit and soul on his canvases, which allows his art to resonate more strongly with viewers. Having studied art his whole life, his heart has always been on modern painting. He likes to paint for his “inner self” in a subconscious and automatic style, similar to that of abstract expressionism. His ink wash canvases recall the fluidity of the haziness of mist and water because they are made with large calligraphy brushes. During the 1960s Ibrahim met Rothko Mark whom he cites as his artistic and spiritual mentor. Both their paintings are similarly perceptual and spiritual. During this period, Ibrahim showed his abstract paintings in New York. His other important influencers include Pollock and de Kooning, the Abstract Expressionists, and Helen Frankenthaler and Paul Jenkins, both of the Color Field painters. His art is in private and corporate collections in a variety of finishing options including framed Bassmi Ibrahim art. His art has also been widely exhibited in the U.S. and abroad. He has held many solo exhibitions, the most recent being those at the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg College, Salt Creek Art Colony, Eckerd College, Panama City Art Center, Pensacola Museum of Art, and Parkersburg Art Center, West Virginia.
