Carolyn Holman began her career as commercial artist. She believes that art is an opportunity to connect with her instinct. Carolyn is flexible in her choice of mediums. They are interchangeable to her as long as she can create a way to involve layers, texture and color. When she began her career, she worked in fine art primarily with chalk pastels. What she loves about chalk pastel is that it takes time to see all that is there. This is also what she likes about encaustic painting. She says there’s a see-through quality when colors come through. And in the paintings, a deeper layer can peek through scarcely being detected but affecting the proceeding layers directly or indirectly. The layers in the pieces of artwork bring the illusion of depth even more by obscuring and suspending the colors, containing them behind a veil of wax. She decided to change to encaustic painting just some few years ago – this is a process that dates back to ancient Egyptian times. The artist uses materials such as pigment, resin crystals and beeswax in her work. She brushes the resin and heated beeswax mixture on wood while still hot and in liquid form. Once the wax becomes firm enough to paint on, Carolyn applies the first layer of oil paint and then brushes the clear beeswax mix on top, after that she heats again using a blow torch – this is meant to seal the paint in and bond the layers together. This brings the attractive pieces that she’s known for. Framed Carolyn Holman can be seen on many walls around the world.
