Artist Julie Heffernan was born and raised in Peoria, Illinois. To present a sensual interior narrative, her art utilizes innumerable art references, a self-symbolism whose undisclosed political agenda is the unembroidered background of the paintings. She received her BFA in Printmaking and Painting from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She then proceeded to the Yale School of Art where she received her Masters of Fine Art in Painting. The Grimm, dark undercurrent that looks like fairy tale transforms her operatic, aristocratic portraits into modern memento mori or vanitas, acting as both a Bosch-like warning and a stylized fantasy. Her luxuriant paintings and the framed Julie Heffernan art are manifestations of her rich knowledge of art history and her sensibilities. Some of her selected exhibitions include those at Milwaukee Art Museum (WI), The Norton Museum (FL), Weatherspoon Art Gallery (NC), Columbia Museum Of Art (SC), Mcnay Art Museum (TX), Knoxville Museum Of Art (TN), The New Museum (NY), The Korean Biennial (Korea), Herter Art Gallery (MA), Tampa Museum Of Art (FL), Virginia Museum of Fine Art (VA), among others. Her style is drawn from the nonsensical, peculiar narratives of her dreams - something of a contemporary surrealist. She likes what she does and Julie considers much of her work as a kind of self-portrait because she draws them so directly from the images of her subconscious. Her art is in many galleries around the world. Often, the interior spaces of her compositions pass on to metaphorical drawing rooms and grand ballrooms, while the exteriors are placed within imagined worlds and abundant forests.
