James Hakewill (Born 1778) loved art from his childhood and knew that his career would be in the arts industry. He studied architecture and after graduation, he entered the architectural field as his chief profession. His reproductions are never duplicated even though, Duperly Adolphe has made some reproductions of Montego Bay, and the settings are quite different. Hakewill’s views of Montego Bay from Reading Hill is said to be one of his most beautiful pieces of art. Although the illustrations of Jamaica never fall in the category of truly great masters, the delicate attention to detail and the charm found in their works cannot but make an impact on those with whom they come in contact. Hakewill was also a proficient painter and, on at least two occasions, he managed to exhibit some of his designs at the Royal Academy of Art. Some of the his prints in the collection of the National Library include Willams Field Estate, St. Thomas-in-the-Vale, Whitney Estate, Clarendon, The Bog Walk, Montego Bay from Reading Hill , The property of Viscount Dudley and Ward, Cardiff Hall, St. Ann’s, Spring Garden, St. George’s. The Property of I.R. Grossett Esquire, Holland Estate, Bridge over the Rio Cobre, King’s Square. St. Jago De La Vega, St. Thomas-in-the-East, Waterfall on Windward Road near Kingston, Kingston and Port Royal from Windsor Farm, among others. He’s best known for his publications that are illustrated, including the sketches of Italy, Windsor, and Jamaica. Framed James Hakewill art are highly priced by many discerning collectors.
