In the more than 30 year span of Gail Goodwin’s career her images have come to be known as some of the best recognized in American culture. They are frequently seen on best selling calendars, greeting cards, puzzles and posters. Gail studied at Cal Arts and the Brooks Institute of Photography, where she learned formal technique and composition. She began her professional career in 1977 by working in Guatemala for a relief agency. It was in Guatemala that she discovered her passion for photographing children and learned that even in the toughest of times, the dreams and hopes of children can conquer through the lens of the camera. Fantasies and dreams are pervasive in her current work with her portraiture and with children. She frequently selects the hand-crafted vintage styling as it helps to reinforce this theme. Gail took her first picture at 10 years of age and she experimented with oil paints and pastels through high school. She never knew that in the future she would combine the two mediums. Today her work captures “decisive moments” offered by life; an idea made famous in the work one of her greatest creative inspirations, Henri Cartier-Bresson, the 20th century French photographer. Gail uses traditional techniques to transform each photograph into an indisputably unique portrait. Her technique is uninhibited, playful and candid; she hand-paints every photograph using transparent Marshall Oil Paints. This has made her art to be easily recognizable, more so the framed Gail Goodwin art. Each of her art has a translucent and classical quality, making the viewer to feel as if they are part of the painting.
