Delbert Gish was born in Oklahoma City, but when he was still a youngster, his family moved to the Pacific Northwest region. He attended the Northwest Nazarene College in Idaho from which he graduated with a major in philosophy and a minor in art. After graduating Gish and his young wife, Marjorie, moved to Seattle where he enrolled in an art school. However, Gish quickly realized that the curriculum at the college was designed to offer commercial art training and he withdrew at noon on the first day. Gish went and studied under a master painter of portraits and still lifes called David Leffel, and spent 2 years as a student of Sergei Bongart, a Russian impressionist, later he worked as an instructor for Bongart. Over the years his paintings have appeared in a wide range of publications and in many juried exhibitions. The artist is known for his landscape, still life and portrait paintings and considers himself a realist painter. In 1975 he was elected as a member of the American Watercolor Society. His works are in private and public collections, including the Seattle Art Museum, the Art Students League in New York City, the SAFECO collection, and the Frye Art Museum. He has received many honors and awards through the years but he rarely mentions them because they are not goals for him. However, in 2004/2005, a major exhibition was held by the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, Washington which featured hundreds of his paintings. His masterful works are represented in collections, galleries and museums throughout the United States. Today, framed Delbert Gish art are in great demand.
