Boston painter Abbott Fuller Graves (Born in 1859) was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts. He was an influential painter known for his still lives floral and garden scenes. Although much of his work, depicted subject matter in a realistic way, in keeping with the Boston School style, his colorful, bright sun-lit paintings and thick, impasto brush strokes showed his acceptance of Impressionism. In this technique, he laid on an area of the painting surface very thickly, thick enough that the painting-knife or brush strokes were visible. In 1884, Graves went to Italy and Paris, and concentrated on still-life painting. He often worked with his good friend and also a Boston artist called Edmund Tarbell. The two friends roomed together in Europe where both studied still-life painting. Graves returned to Boston in 1885, and became a member of the faculty of the Cowles Art School. His father, a furniture maker, was his first art teacher. Graves later went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he got his first formal training at the School of Design. As a result of his study of figure painting, he began to paint figures with flowers. Back in Boston, he got a warm reception by the Boston art colony, and he became a member of the Paint and Clay Club, the Society of Boston Watercolor Painters, the Boston Art Students Association, the Boston Art Club and the Copley Society. His art is much sought after. More so the ready to hang framed Abbott Fuller Graves art which are currently in great demand worldwide.
