W. Michael Frye is a professional photographer who specializes in nature and landscape photography. He’s also the principal photographer and/or the author of 5 books, among them “The Great Masters; The Photographer’s Guide to Yosemite” and “Digital Landscape Photography: In the Footsteps of Ansel Adams”; and three books in the Yosemite Meditations series. He’s also written three e-books, including Landscapes in Lightroom 5, Exposure for Outdoor Photography, and The Essential Step-by-Step Guide. Apart from those, he’s written several magazine articles on the technique and art of photography, and his images have been published in more than 30 countries around the world, including the magazines Texas Highways, Outdoor Photographer, National Wildlife, Sunset, American Photo, and a bunch of others. Since 1983, the artist has lived either in or near Yosemite National Park. Currently, he resides just outside the park in Mariposa, California. He’s also a teacher of photography. Frye is not sure about “producing images of objects.” He usually tells students that photographers don’t photograph objects but they photograph the light reflected off of objects. This explains why a great subject with poor light will make a poor photograph. On the other hand, an ordinary subject with great light makes a great photograph. Some photographers have a recognizable, uniform style. Frye is not one of them. He says that to him, it seems limiting to only photograph the world one way, so he’s developed several distinct bodies of work which include delicate high-key work, surreal nighttime images, and classic landscape photographs, and his main tool is light.
