Ellen Fisher (1847 - 1911) was born in Boston, Massachusetts. She loved art from a very young age and always spent her time doing art while surrounded by the works of other artists whom she admired. She moved to Brooklyn, New York as a child with her father who was a doctor. There she continued with her artwork and when she came of age, married Edward Thornton Fisher in 1869. Ellen is known for her watercolor floral studies and other still lifes. Primarily self-taught, Ellen learned art techniques from Abbott Thayer, her younger brother, who studied at the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art School. From 1867 to 1884, she exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association and from 1868 to 1880, in 5 exhibitions of the National Academy of Design. In 1885, her work was shown at the Pennsylvania Academy. She had a contract with the Prang Company for all of her work from 1884 to 1887. Her art are easy to recognize because of her unique style. They can easily be picked out from among the works of other artists. She was very bold when t came to the use of colors and texture and could not take any detail for granted.
