Rosso Fiorentino (March 8, 1494 – November 14, 1540), who was also known as Giovanni Battista di Jacopo, was born in Florence with red hair thus his nick name, which means “red Florentine” in Italian. He was a Mannerist painter in fresco and oil and belonged to the Florentine school. Fiorentino first trained alongside his contemporary, Pontormo in the studio of Andrea del Sarto. He later moved to Rome, where he was exposed to the works of Raphael, Michelangelo and other Renaissance artists. This resulted in the realignment of his artistic style. After the Sacking of 1527, Fiorentino flee to France where he secured a position at the court of Francis I in 1530. That’s where he remained until his death. He was among the leading artists who worked on “First School of Fontainebleau” at the Chateau Fontainebleau. His reputation, along Francesco Primaticcio and other late Renaissance Florentines, was long out of favor compared to other graceful naturalistic contemporaries, but over the last few decades it has revived considerably. The fact that his masterpiece was in a small city was a factor in the revival of his works, considering that they were made before photography arrived. Fiorentino’s poses are contorted, and his figures often appear haggard and thin, but his work has considerable power and is admired by many collectors. His best work is the "Descent from the Cross" altarpiece. Apart from that, many framed Rosso Fiorentino art pieces have found favor with many collectors and are currently found in many private and corporate collections around the world.
