Marcel Duchamp (July 28, 1887 – October 2, 1968) was an artist who became a naturalized American citizen, although he was born in France. He was renowned for several artistic disciplines, including painting, sculpting, and writing. Although he never himself wanted to associate publicly with Dada groups, his artistic works have been widely associated with both conceptual and Dadaism art styles. Around the World War I period, Duchamp rejected several artwork pieces by other artists, saying that they're basically for the eye but nothing in depth. He was born in Upper Normandy region of France in a family that enjoyed artistic activities, including painting, playing chess, reading books, and more. Duchamp’s early works are mainly associated with Post-Impressionist art styles. From 1904 to 1905, he joined Academie Julian where he studied art. It's around the same period that he created cartoon paintings that expressed humor and visual pun. He also incorporated text in most of these works. Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2, sparked widespread controversy, prompting a request for him to rename it when it was presented at the Cubist Salon des Independants. He refused to rename it and because there was no jury at the Salon at that time, it couldn't be rejected. Another controversy with the artwork was whether it fitted being hung together with Cubist artwork pieces. The same artwork would later be submitted at the 1913 "Armory Show" hosted in New York City. It also created controversy in the show, particularly because the American audience was mainly used to realist art. It was in 1913 that Duchamp withdrew from painting after creating several artwork pieces. It’s at this point that he started creating his experimental art-science. He would later move to the U.S. in 1915 only to realize that he was a celebrity. Duchamp got involved in several different artwork pieces while in the U.S., including teaching French, art making, and art dealing. And to date, his art are still available in different galleries and art dealerships. Framed Marcel Duchamp art remain in galleries and collections across the globe.
