John Carroll Doyle (Born 1942) was born in Charleston, SC. He was both prolific and talented. The catalog of his work numbers in the hundreds. Framed John Carroll Doyle art has been hung in Japan and throughout Europe. One of his outstanding artworks was commissioned for the Chicago bar Blue Chicago and the image (“Mojo Mama”) is so popular with many art enthusiasts. He got his start with his characteristic sportfishing paintings which have adorned the covers of many popular sportfishing magazines from the late 1970’s to the early 1980’s. Doyle was capable of producing up to 20 paintings a month. The artist painted from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. 7 days a week. He was also good at public relations and a good businessman so his inventory sold quickly. Doyle is internationally known for his light filled, energetic paintings of subjects as diverse as blue hydrangeas, blues musicians and blue marlins. He grew up in Charleston and he could most definitely count on one hand the number of times he left the peninsula, except when he crossed to Mount Pleasant. From still life to wildlife, he painted with an understanding and passion that makes it hard to believe he was self taught. His large scale commissioned paintings are still famous to date and they can be seen on the walls of several restaurants and hotels in downtown Charleston, as well as in restaurants and clubs as far afield as Illinois and Alexandria, Virginia, Chicago, North Carolina, California and Florida.
