Niagara is a painter and a musician who was born in Detroit Michigan. She studied at the University of Michigan where she founded the band Destroy All Monsters together with her fellow students Jim Shaw and Mike Kelley. She was the lead vocalist in the band and also of another band called Dark Carnival which she later fronted with drummer Scott Asheton and guitarist Ron Asheton. Niagara loved at when she was still very young and was enamored to John R. Neill, an artist who illustrated works by L. Frank Baum and others. Her greatest influencer was Roy Lichtenstein who utilized the comic panel and cartoon style. Niagara was also influenced by the “lowbrow” aesthetic which evolved in Southern California in the 1970s. Her later painting style was very much influenced by the promotional materials for Destroy All Monsters, Xerox prints, and the early 1970s works with collage. Niagara prints with acrylic on canvas. She applied her art school experience to create promotional art and album for early Destroy All Monsters performances. She combined some collage with an illustrator's hand and pop iconography. Her style began to take shape seriously during the later Destroy All Monsters incarnation creating album art and flyers with Ron Asheton, and by the early 1990s, Niagara began to show her paintings in cafes and small exhibits around the Detroit area. She collaborated with other artists using a Xerox printer to create the first Proto-Punk gig flyers. Today, framed Niagara art is much sought after by many collectors and can be found in many private and public collections.
