Paul Detlefsen (1900-1986) was the son of a medical doctor. He was born in Chicago and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and the Chicago Art Institute. He later went to Hollywood to make a name for himself in the cartoon business. Paul settled for a job of painting backdrops for films since he couldn’t get a job in the animation field. Within a short time, he became a master of special effects and supervised the camera crews that augmented his background creations. Paul worked for Douglas Fairbanks and Cecil B. Demille before joining Warner Brothers to work with Richard Barthelmes and Bette avis in the “Cabin in the Cotton.” He stayed with Warner Brothers for 20 years and in the course of those years he and Walt Disney became good friends. Paul Detlefsen was in the film industry for 30 years. At age 50 he decided to try his hand as a calendar artist. That was after movies fell on hard time. "The Good Old Days" was his first painting. It scored an immediate success and was beaten in popularity only by Boy Scout Calendar by Norman Rockwell. His artworks were lithographed into playing cards, calendars, four-foot wide wall murals, reproductions, mats for tables, and jigsaw puzzles. He created most of the scenes on his own and the scenes featured the charming nostalgic turn of the rural settings that many people can remember from their childhood. Detlefsen used his friends, his grandchildren, his daughter and other family members as models. He painted up to 6 months before he died in 1986 aged 86. Framed Paul Detlefsen art are quite popular and can are availed by many galleries and are found in diverse reputable collections.
