Nancy Davidson’s interest in painting and drawing was sparked by her grandparents' collection of etchings artist Edward Borein. Her great-uncle had worked for Edward in his Santa Barbara studio and there were many fine examples of Edward’s work hanging on the walls of her grandparents’ living room. Nancy was fascinated with Edward’s images of early California ranch life, cattle, horses and vaqueros. With paper and pencil she would spend long hours making copies of these images and offering them to her grandfather for his exacting but gentle critiques. That’s how her art training began before she even started elementary school. She continued with her art education at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and Santa Barbara City College, UC Santa Barbara. Another influence on her art was her job at Santa Barbara City College, where she worked in the early 1980’s as the Geologic Illustrator for the Department of Planetary and Earth Sciences. It was there that she gained an appreciation for the structure of the earth and the local landscapes in respect to the forces that built it. Framed Nancy Davidson art show her talent in art production. She uses high quality materials that make the art to be able to be used for decoration for a lifetime. No matter what she’s painting, her subject is always light. For this reason Nancy favors late afternoons and early mornings when colors are rich, shadows are long and forms are exposed. In each painting her goal is to go beyond the specific reality in front of her and enter the everlasting realm of universal experience.
