Framed Dahl Prints

Hans Dahl (1849 - 1937) was born in Hardanger, Norway. He had his first exhibition in 1876 in Düsseldorf. By then he had already found subjects and a style which he later kept to. From 1888 he lived in Germany from but every summer he would go to Norway to make sketches of the wetland scenery. A new school of art arose in the 1890s and artists like Dahl were by then not popular in the art circles. He was particularly criticized by the art historian Thiis Jens. None of Dahl’s paintings is in the National Art Gallery because Thiis Jens was so much opposed to his painting style. Another artist Krogh Christian also disapproved Dahl’s art. However, Dahl maintained his opinion of art. Apart from his painting skills, he also enjoyed a debate and had good writing skills. At one time he said that he wanted art to be comprehensible to ordinary people. He never wanted art to be scholastic culture for the elite. He had a large market with private collectors. The artist often described the scenery of the western part of Norway with smiling people in national costumes and in brilliant sunshine. He was not highly valued as an artist by art critiques in his own time. However, his art was very popular elsewhere, and in 1980s his paintings have fetched prices around 200,000 kroner. Framed Hans Dahl art can today be found hanging on the wall of many prestigious galleries, museums, homes and institutions in many countries around the world.
