Aelbert Cuyp Art

Aelbert Cuyp (1620 – 1691) was born in Dordrecht. He was a landscape artist who was often referred to as the Dutch Lorrain. Aelbert was born in a family of artists – his father, Jacob Gerritsz Cuyp, was a portraitist, while his grandfather and uncle were both glass strainers. Aelbert studied art with his father and had a young uncle as his fellow student. Upon the death of his parents, he inherited a considerable fortune that helped to boost his artistic ambition. In 1659, Aelbert married a widow who was a member of the patrician family. He became very active in religious and civic affairs throughout his life. This religious life influenced most of his work. In 1659, he became a deacon of the Reformed Community, and in 1667, he became an elder of the Church Council. In 1682, he became a member of the Tribunal of Eight for the Southern Provinces. Aelbert’s wife died in 1689 and two years later, he also died. Aelbert probably spent the last two years of his life at the home of his only daughter and her husband who was a proprietor of "le Lis", a brewhouse. Aelbert is especially known for his large views of the Dutch countryside in late afternoon or early morning light. He painted portraits, still lives, landscapes, and animals. Under the influence of other artists, he painted diagonal compositions that show an almost monochromatic yellowish color and a good sense of space. His more individualistic style is considered his best. His paintings are well-balanced in composition, simple in outline, profound in tonalities, and are notable for the large foreground masses.
