Charles Crombie (Born 1880) was born in Dumfries, Scotland. He specialized in publication illustrations and cartoons. His father was a partner in the Byrne & Crombie, a London architectural practice. Crombie’s "The Rules Of Golf", a collection of humorous postcard cartoons was published in 1906 by Perrier, and rapidly became a best-selling series. Following the success of this series, he produced others, notably "The Rules Of Cricket" which was also very successful. By 1901 he was already working as an artist and sculptor, from his family home at 25 Rumsey Road, Lambeth. In 1907, he married Helena Wallace in Lambeth, and by 1911 the couple was living at Hogarth House, Richmond Upon Thames, Surrey. Their first child, a daughter, was born there in 1914. A year later, part of Hogarth House was sold to Bloomsbury Set socialites Virginia and Leonard Woolf, who named their establishment the Hogarth Press after the building. He continued to paint and produce illustrations for magazines and books in the UK and US throughout the 1920s and 1930s. His paintings were mainly sold as framed Charles Crombie art which came in different colors of frames to satisfy the varying needs of his clients. Today his art can be seen in several galleries, museums, institution and homes around the world. His art is highly priced by many discriminating collectors because they can be used to decorate all spaces and are also inspiring. The artist died in 1967 in Hitchin, Hertfordshire aged 86. His art still cause a lot of excitement among artists and non-artists as well.
