Walter Crane (August 1845 – March 1915) was the most influential, and is considered to be among the most prolific, children’s book creators of his generation, and along with Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott, one of the strongest contributors to the child's nursery motif. His work featured some of the more detailed and colorful beginnings of the child-in-the-garden motifs that would characterize many children's stories and nursery rhymes for decades to come. Crane was the son of Marie Crane, the daughter of a malt-maker, and Thomas Crane, a miniaturist and portrait painter. He produced an array of illustrations, paintings, ceramic tiles, children's books, and other decorative arts, and was part of the Arts and Crafts movement. He is also remembered for his creation of numerous iconic images associated with the international Socialist movement. Crane was a diligent student of the renowned critic and artist John Ruskin. He came to appreciate and study the detailed senses of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and was a staunch follower of the newer art movements. Crane was a student who admired the masters of the Italian Renaissance; but he was mostly influenced by the British Museum’s Elgin marbles. An important element in the development of his talent was the study of Japanese color prints, the methods of which he imitated in a series of toy books, which started a new fashion. Currently, framed Walter Crane art are highly priced by many distributors. He contributed to many libertarian publishers, including Freedom Press and Liberty Press. He is credited with the design of the front facade of "The Bomb Shop" and for its decoration.
