Pieter Cramer (Born 1721) was a wealthy merchant and entomologist from the Netherlands, Amsterdam. Cramer came up with an extensive natural history collection including insects of all orders. He collected many colorful moths and butterflies from countries where the Dutch had trading or colonial links such as Surinam in South America. Since he wanted a permanent record of his collection, he engaged the artist Lambertz Gerrit Wartenaar to draw his specimens. Cramer also arranged for the artist to draw moths and butterflies from the Netherlands and belonging to other keen Lepidoptera collectors. The collection was of such a high quality that Caspar Stoll encouraged Cramer to publish the set of drawings. This is how De Uitlandsche Kapellen came to be published. The publication consisted of thirty four issues in 4 volumes and all of the drawings had comprehensive descriptions of the insects. However, Cramer died before the publication was completed. Stoll had to take over responsibility for the publication and produced a supplement. The publication is a key work in the history of entomology. In it there are beautiful illustrations with fine hand-colored engravings. In fact this was the first book to use the then new system that Carl Linnaeus developed for classifying and naming animals. Close to 2000 butterfly species were described, Stoll and Cramer illustrating and naming many new species for the first time. After his death Cramer's collections were broken up and auctioned, sold and donated to individuals and institutions. The Dutch National Natural History Museum came to own quite a number of his specimens.
