French painter Pierre Cot (Born 1837) belonged to the French Romantic Academic Classicism art movement. He was an avid painter whose art was strongly influenced by The French Academie des Beaux-Arts. At an early age, he used to wake up early in the morning to paint while the light was good. Among his first pieces was “The Storm” which was commissioned from him by Catharine Lorillard Wolfe. It became one of his finest pieces of art. The painting now hangs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Among his other notable works were Promethee, Mireille, Dionisa, and The Day of Deaths. Cot is known for his remarkable portraits, which is what he mostly painted and his art spread all over the world. Cot first studied art in Toulouse at the l’Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He later moved to Paris, where he was taught by William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Alexandre Cabanel and Leon Cogniet. The three were all known to have influenced his style. Cot was also guided by Bouguereau and Francisque Duret, whom he later married his daughter. The artist made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1863.
