Francois Clouet (c. 1510 – 22 December 1572) was a French painter whose legacy still leaves on due to his many great paintings, including his French ruling family portraits. An oil painter who was also a reputed French Renaissance miniaturist, Francois Clouet was the son of another renowned painter, Jean Clouet, something that brought confusion in their works. He became very active in painting in 1536. As an artist, he displayed greater talent than his father, mastering the court painting style that was embraced across Europe. Francois created several portraits of Francis I, Louvre, and Uffizi. His portrait of "Mary, Queen of Scots" became one of his most adored portraits. Although identifying his works were a challenge, some of his original works that he signed, “Portrait of Pierre Quthe” and “Diane de Poitiers,” helped in the identification of his other works. Francois’ paintings were appreciated by many art critics and he became a darling of many poets of his time such as Joachim du Bellay and Pierre de Ronsard. His works, particularly portraits provided more vivid expression of the human face. They’re characterized with dry precision, elegance, and definitive plasticity that make every work he does stand out in its own way. Having become a renowned painter during his time, Francois’ works continued to gain ground even after his death. Now, his works are exhibited in galleries, art centers, and museums across the globe. Moreover, Francois Clouet framed art pieces still continue to sell through galleries and other art dealers.
