Thomas Chippendale (1718 – 1779) was born of John Chippendale and his first wife Mary. He was the only child so he had all the attention from his parents. Chippendale received an elementary education at Prince Henry's Grammar School. He must have received his basic training from his father because his family had long been in the wood working trades – even his father was a joiner. Before he moved to London, it is believed that he was also trained in York by Richard Wood. He married Catherine Redshaw on 19 May 1748 at St George's Chapel, and they had 5 boys and 4 girls. Not much is known about his earl life until his marriage to Redshaw Catherine. He became one of the leading England’s cabinetmakers of the 18th-century. He was also one of the top figures in the history of furniture. Chippendale’s name is synonymous with the Anglicized Rococo style. In 1749 the artist rented a modest house near Covent Garden in Conduit Court. And 3 years later, he moved to Somerset Court. He moved to St. Martin’s Lane in 1753, and this is where he maintained his workshops, showrooms, and home for the rest of his life. He published the Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director in 1754. A publication that was much celebrated as it contained the most important collection of furniture designs that had never been published before in England. Chippendale died in November of 1779 in London leaving behind a legacy of artwork including several framed Thomas Chippendale art.
