Valerio Castello (Born 1624) was born in Genoa. He was born to Bernardo Castello who was also a painter. His father died when he was only six years old. In the first half of the 1640s, after he had trained in his native city, Castello travelled to Parma and Milan. His paintings from this period reflect the influence of Parmigianino and Correggio. He spent the rest of his career in Genoa where he admired the work of Van Dyck in particular. Castello painted a number of frescoes in many churches and palaces in Genoa but his success was cut short by his early death in 1659. That notwithstanding, his art is still popular to date, especially the framed Valerio Castello art. After his father’s death, Valerio and his brothers were attached to the noble family of Torquato. He had been intended to study a literate profession, but he showed an affinity to drawing. His patrons noted this and they arranged his apprenticeship with Domenico Fiasella. He traveled to Milan with Agostino Merano, and while in Milan, he admired the work of Camillo Proccacini. Castello then traveled to Parma where he excelled in painting battle-scenes. His style united elegant figures with violent, dramatic compositions composed of vibrant colors and spontaneous brushwork. He decorated the cupola of the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata del Vastato, and painted the Rape of the Sabines, now in the Palazzo Brignole, Genoa. Castello passionately studied a vast range of sources, and this made him to form a sophisticated and unique artistic style. Patrons admired his paintings of religious and mythological subjects as well as his lively oil sketches.
