Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796 - 1875) was a portrait and landscape painter from France. He was also a printmaker in etching and his huge output foresees the Impressionism plein air innovations and references the Neo-Classical tradition simultaneously. His approach to his subjects was traditional. He was essentially a studio painter although he was a major proponent of plein-air studies. For most of his life, he spent his summers travelling and collecting sketches and studies, and spent his winters finishing more market-ready and polished works. His emphasis on drawing images from the memory and imagination rather than direct observation was in line with the tastes of the jurors of the Salon, of which he was a member. Throughout his life Corot never felt the want of money, as his parents ran their businesses well and made good investments. He even received a scholarship to study, but because he was having academic difficulties, he left and entered a boarding school. In school, he was not a brilliant student, and throughout his entire school career he did not get any nomination for a prize, not even for the drawing classes. Corot's attention was not only captured by Italian architecture and light, it was also captured by Italian females as well. He even said that Italians had the most beautiful women in the world that he’s ever met.... their shoulders, their eyes, their hands, and everything about them are spectacular. Today many galleries and collectors stock framed Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot art because they demand is very high.
