Alexandre Cabanel’s skill in drawing was apparently evident by the age of 11. He was from a poor family and his father could not afford his training. Luckily, he got a grant to go to Paris and study. He registered as a pupil of François-Edouard Picot at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts the following October. In 1843, at his first Salon he presented a painting titled “Agony in the Garden” and won second place in the Prix de Rome competition. The pictures Cabanel painted for Alfred Bruyas showed more clearly the direction his art had taken during his stay in Italy. Bruyas was his chief patron at this time. The paintings also showed his taste for the suave finish and elegiac types of the Florentine Mannerists. When Cabanel returned to Paris, he was commissioned by Cicéron Lesueur for a decorative work in the Salon des Caryatides in the Hôtel de Ville. He got many more decorative commissions after this, including work on the Hôtel Say, the Hôtel Pereire, and the Louvre. Cabanel exhibited Christian Martyr in 1855, Glorification of St Louis, and Autumn Evening, which made him to establish his academic and official credentials. Besides being a painter, Cabanel was also a teacher. Many of his pupils often won the Prix de Rome just like those of his master, Picot. Among his best known pupils are Lodewijk Royer, Jules Bastien-Lepage, Edouard Théophile Blanchard, Henri Gervex and Edouard Debat-Ponsan. Cabanel was elected regularly to the Salon jury. Currently framed Alexandre Cabanel art are much sought after by many renowned collectors.
