Pierre Joseph Buchoz (Born in 1731) was born in born in Metz. He became a doctor of medicine in Nancy in 1763. Joseph Buchoz was devoted to botany, but at the same time, he was also interested in the treatment of melancholy and, in fact, he recommended music as therapy for those suffering from melancholy. He travelled throughout Lorraine, his native, and published a 13-volume Natural History of the province. He taught botany as well, and he was demonstrator at the Royal College of Physicians of Nancy. He authored many works on botany and he also studied animals (more so the birds) and minerals. He was a visual artist and a lawyer whose works have been sold at auctions. Joseph Buchoz was a regular correspondent, or an active member of many Academies: Angers, Metz and Nancy, Bordeaux, Béziers, Chalons-sur-Marne, Caen, Lyon, Dijon, Rouen2 and Mainz. A partial list of his publications include “Memory on how to cure melancholy through music”, General and economic history of the three orders, Rural and Practical Medicine, Natural history of domestic animals, Plant and Native Pharmacopoeia, Natural history of the vegetable kingdom, among others. Joseph Buchoz was the son of Bughaut, a recipient of the Commandery of Malta and bourgeois of Metz. His father’s name was later corrected to "Buchoz" on 24 January 1758 after a judgment of the bailiwick of Metz.
