Giovanni Borra was born and raised in Dogliani. From 1733 to 1736, he studied under Bernardo Vittone Antonio, whose influence could be seen in all his works that followed. Some of his notable works today hang on the walls of the some of the most prestigious buildings in the world. He also designed several Piedmontese hydraulic projects and fortifications at Alessandria. These artworks and their images led to the creation of motifs from Palmyra and Baalbek which became fashionable for ceiling and interior decorations in Italy and England (the artist used them, for instance, in his own work on the Palazzo Isnardi on the south facade and of the interior decoration of its Sala di Diana and Sala d'Ercole, on the piano nobile). In the course of this time he managed to produce 10 plates for his teacher's Elementary Education by Address of the University of the Civil Engineering, published in 1760 in Lugano. Through his art, he used to capture the attention of the viewrs who would invariably stand to have a second look. Some would end up buying them without planning to buy them. While in Rome, he met Robert Wood, and joined his antiquarian expedition (1750 - 51) to Syria and Asia Minor as its architectural draughtsman before he returned with Robert to England. Today, his images, especially the framed Giovanni Borra art, adorn the walls of many prestigious building s around the world. His pieces of art are popular because they can be used to decorate any space.
