Pancrace Bessa (Born 1772) was born in Paris. He was a botanicals master. Early in his career Bessa created some artwork for Empress Josephine. When he died in 1846, he left behind 100s of paintings and engraving plates of his works, including fruits, flowers, and other vegetation. Unlike many other artists of his time, not much is known about his life. Bessa began painting as a young man and then went ahead to study under great painters including Gerard van Spaendonck. At the age of 38, he got a job with a botanical magazine where his duty involved the production of illustrations of flowers and fruits. He spent much of his later life in a home which he purchased in ecouen. In 1834 he sold the property and then moved to a colony of artists in the same town before he died. He was one of the leading flower and fruit painters in France. He briefly became a pupil of an engraver and a botanical illustrator. Bessa worked with Redoute Pierre-Joseph, from which he learned the skills that he used for drawing his botanical images. he went on to work for the Duchess de Berry regardless of the fact the he had a close relationship with Pierre-Joseph Redoute. But critics noted the influence Redoute even after he worked with the de Berry family. Bessa produced his art in a variety of finishing options, with the most popular being the framed Pancrace Bessa art. His art is also available in many other finishing options as well as online.
