Sally Bennett Baxley is influenced by the decorative aspects of many artistic cultures; whether a depression-era textile, a Japanese kimono, European decorative arts or Ancient Indian motifs. Decoration and design have remained a constant force in her work. She says all serve a purpose of satisfying the soul and pleasing the eye. Sally trained as a painter at the Lacoste School of the Arts in Lacoste, France, and the Maryland Institute College of Art. Drawn to balance and serenity in art and in nature, her paintings are an escape from darkness, chaos, disjunctive forces, and ugliness in the world. She uses the instruments of texture and color to compose symphonies on canvas. She’s experimenting with collage elements and uses old print media that look like scrapbooks of lost American innocence. Her paintings have a melodious quality because she bases them on the motifs of abstracted botanical forms, and the images recede and advance in a harmonious interplay of form, color, and light like the tune of a beautiful piece of music, that pleases and intrigues the eye. Her recent paintings induce melancholy and the longing for an earlier state of grace. Sally spent many years honing her sense of balance and color in the field of interior design. In 2007, She decided to return to her studio full-time and this has shaped her growth as a fine artist and she has developed a committed following among collectors and designers across the country. Ready to hang framed Sally Bennett Baxley art are great for decorative purposes.
