Marco Benefial (1684 - 1764) was born in Rome. He was known to be a nonconformist and ennobled existing Roman painting with naturalism and humanity, while reacting against the popular late Baroque style. Benefial anticipated Neoclassicism in seeking to renew study of nature by artists and to return to the usual tradition of Raphael and Annibale Carracci. Benefial used luminous, warm colors and portrayed in his art tangible human figures. He’s known for his complex treatment of space. In 1703 one of his paintings was rejected for exhibition at the Pantheon, so he decided to display it in a pharmacist's window. Benefial partnered with some artists who were inferior but as they were working as a team, the artists subsequently received credit for the good work, and this has lead to some of his paintings being misidentified. In 1720, he protested a decree by Pope Clement XI that only members of Accademia di San Luca could teach drawing. His protest yielded fruit and the ruling got revoked. In 1718 Benefal won the title of Cavaliere courtesy of his papal commission for a Roman church. Along with altarpieces and frescoes, Benefial painted numerous portraits. Framed Marco Benefial art are today highly priced by many collectors. In 1741, the artist was elected into the Accademia di San Luca, be he did not stay there for long. He was fed up with what he referred to as the ignorance and mediocrity of the fellow member. When he denounced their behavior, he was expelled in 1755. After that, his work then developed an almost crude realism.
