After being discharged from the service, he went back to New York City and studied anatomy and drawing at the Art Students League. This helped to improve the quality of hi work. From 1951 to 1966, he worked as an illustrator at Charles E. Cooper Studios in New York. His first paperback cover was A Bullet for Billy the Kid by Nelson Nye. He had a twenty-two-year career as a successful commercial artist, producing illustrations, movie posters and book covers for such publications as Reader's Digest, The Saturday Evening Post and Argosy, and his numerous clients included the Baseball and Football Halls of Fame, the New York Giants football team, and the United States Air Force. Through his detailed portraits of cowboys and Native Americans, Bama has been referred to as an “American Realist.” His style is realism and he’s very keen to detail.
