Ruth Adler (Born 1923) was born in Frankfurt, Germany. Her mother was a talented artist (calligrapher) who studied at the Bauhaus. Adler was provided with training in the arts by a family friend, the artist Paul Klee. By then she was still a young girl. However, her life in Germany was disrupted by the Nazi regime. The family was forced to flee to America when their home was destroyed during Kristallnacht. The family settled in Detroit, and the young Ruth was enrolled her at Cass Technical High School where she graduated in 1942 after excelling in art. Two years after graduation, she received a fellowship to the Harvard University Graduate School of Architecture and Design. At the university, she studied under Walter Gropius a very renowned artist. Due to her hard work, dedication and excellent performance, she received a full scholarship to the Rhode Island School of Design. Here she gradated in 1945 with a bachelor of fine arts degree. Fully armed academically, she took a position in New York City with the industrial design firm of Raymond Loewy. Here, she worked alongside talented designers like Minoru Yamasaki and Warren Platner. Today, she’s much sought after more so because of the high quality framed Ruth Adler art that buyers prefer when it comes to home décor. Ruth decided to return to Michigan because of a fellowship she received to the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1946. She got the opportunity to study under Eliel Saarinen who taught her architectural design. Ruth worked with and was inspired by the faculty and the talents of her fellow students. She has received many awards throughout her career.
