Niccolò dell'Abbate (1509 or 1512 - 1571) was born in Modena, Italy. He was the son of a violinist. Dell’Abbate was of the Emilian school and an Italian Mannerist painter in oils and fresco. The artist was part of the team of artists referred to as “the School of Fontainebleau” that introduced the Italianate Renaissance to France. Together with Alberto Fontana, he trained Antonio Begarelli’s studio. Antonio was a local Modenese sculptor. Dell' Abbate created his artwork from observation. His goal was to portray a sense of strength, beauty, and balance through his posters, prints, and art. He specialized in long friezes with mythological and secular subjects, including for the Palazzo dei Beccherie. Just like his influencers, he also played with colors to bring a sense of balance each of his compositions and add to them some beauty and warmth. Each of his pieces contains objects that are arranged in various compositions playing on the weight and balance of each element. He’s is best known for his mythological landscape subjects, such as the Death of Eurydice with the Orpheus and Landscape in the National Gallery, London. Another great piece of his is the Rape of Prosperine which is found in the Louvre. Not many of his frescoes have survived; but the Louvre has a collection of some of his drawings. Dell' Abbate enjoyed a very intimate creative process where he handled and manipulated the materials in a creative way. However, many of his canvasses were burnt in 1643, by Anne, the Austrian regent. That notwithstanding, framed Niccolò dell'Abbate art are very popular all over the world and are found in many collections.
