Art Deco Art

The Art Deco movement emerged in the early part of the 20th century, in Post-World War I France, and reached its height in the 1920s. It was a decadent period, as beautifully portrayed in F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby", that was all about excess, modernization, travel and excitement. The Art Deco decor style exudes luxury and glamor and has rich colors and textures, bold geometry, clean lines, exotic designs and high shine. Travel became more commonplace during the art deco period, exposing people to different cultures. Designers drew inspiration from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and Africa. There is a mixture of materials such as glass, mirrors, exotic woods, shiny metals and black lacquered finishes. Vibrant colors in deep purples, blues, greens, pinks, and reds are mixed in with black, silver and gold. Wood carvings, animal skins, wallpaper, rich fabrics, columns with motifs and zigzag patterns dominate the style. Combing all these elements in a room's decor creates a dramatic, lavish and sophisticated space.

Our collection of Art Deco artwork captures the style through vintage travel posters, prints with strong geometric patterns, paintings of sultry figures from the 1920s, jazz posters and more in contrasting colors that are exciting and vibrant. Adding a frame with rich brown tones, ornate silver accents or black satin finishes adds to the look and feel that is characteristic of Art Deco.

Patterns

Artwork provides an easy and affordable way to introduce the Art Deco style into a room's decor. Geometric prints with angular shapes, chevron designs, stepped patterns and bold colors are typical to the style and are an excellent choice. The "Daring Deco" series of prints have the classic straight lines and flowing curves together with a mix of contrasting colors that are distinctive of the Art Deco style. Framing the prints in a black frame with a satin finish completes the look and provides a focal point in a dining room with marble floors and a unique Art Deco table design.

Zig-zag patterned artwork is another way to go. "Abstract Waves Black/Gold Tiles III" has interweaving decorative lines with black, gold and silver colors that, when framed in an ornate gold frame, introduces an element of Art Deco in a bedroom with clean lines and neutral colors.

Symmetry and cubic forms are common in Art Deco design and are relevant today. A touch of the Art Deco style can be incorporated into a modern living room by simply hanging a series of framed Art Deco geometric prints, with pastel colors, above a rectangular box-shaped sofa that has shiny stainless steel legs.

1920s Style

The "Roaring Twenties" are synonymous and go hand-in-hand with the Art Deco style. It was a time of fashionable elegance, jazz music and opulence. Women became free-spirited, more liberated and challenged the traditional ideas. They cut their hair short, shortened their hemlines and wore more revealing clothing. Movie legends such as Garbo, Dietrich and Crawford became fashion icons as did Zelda Fitzgerald. Some of these trends have been captured in great detail in vintage posters. "Art Deco Elegance", "Art Deco Flapper" and "Arte Deco Fashion" are some of the best examples. Framed in gold, silver or black, these pieces of artwork will enhance a room's Art Deco style.
